I went for a bike ride with my life partner yesterday ... & today I am amazed to notice how 'riding a bike' is so similar to 'balancing one's life'.
Remember how unsure you felt when you first experienced that description-defying 'balance in motion' sensation while attempting to ride that 1st bike? -- Aware that this 'free flow' could 'take you places', yet unsure how to reliably steer, control your speed, & keep your balance?
And now, years later ... even if you haven't been on a bike ... you still 'know you could do it'. You may have even taught others to ride -- and possibly have also uttered those "it's just like riding a bike" words, to reassure someone -- that seemingly-complicated skills or 'balancing acts' in life can be 'easy to do' once you simply 'learn how'. Well, now I'm returning this well-intended remark to you.
Years ago, as I taught leadership skills to corporate & public audiences, I was surprised by how easily I could lead others to discover & identify the types of 'key supports' or 'resources' it takes to consistently perform/do well at virtually any task. I'd simply 1) let them pick any skill-related topic (they'd often chose a hobby or sport), and then 2) display and let them openly respond to this question: 'What it takes to be really good at (I'd insert the chosen topic here) ___________ is ________________ ..."
They routinely would list several items (i.e. 'motivation', 'skills', 'materials', 'practice'); and would often need direction & support to identify other key items as well (i.e.'information', 'time', 'space', 'feedback', etc.).
At the completion of this simple exercise, they'd often leave feeling excited & energized at finding this 'set of life-encompassing elements to achieve at anything', yet also a bit unsure of how to use this to actually 'go places' in life. Much like first discovering the 'individual elements' in chemistry class, 'doing something of value'' with just this much knowledge' remained an intriguing yet distant possibility.
While 'the elements' do provide the critical foundation, there's something practical & valuable in this for us all: Like riding that bike the first time, just knowing 'there's much to explore' and 'there are easier & quicker ways to get there' can & does take you to ... & beyond 'far-away possibilities' -- without even knowing from the start 'the elements' it takes to get there.
Remember when you 'began learning', how quickly you wanted & managed to 'go ride & explore on your own'? Without fully knowing, you 'gathered what you needed (e.g. your bike & your senses)' & 'did what it took' to get started, keep trying & continue on. Away you would go ... The surrounding 'harmony in motion' quickly supported & freed you from the need for 'training wheels'... and 'new & distant possibilities' soon were identified & reached by you.
As we first try to learn -- & immediately 'use' & 'try to do' what it takes to simply keep our balance -- we soon realize that a relatively smooth, open surface will make it easier to move along. With this much in place, we continue ... keep trying ....& soon learn to make adjustments as we go ... as we pedal, coast ... & go at different speeds ... & in different directions as well. Before long, we begin to choose where we go ... progress at a comfortable pace ... & even discover or learn how to enjoy the journey as we go.
If only a person could learn to do this in life as a whole, huh? Wouldn't that be something? To actually get to places, learn new things, and comfortably 'GO' on? These days? Guess what? You really can. For life. We each & all have this opportunity -- complete with the supportive resources & easy-to-learn skills -- to explore & learn in life, in ways that best individually fit for us as well -- literally 4 life.
Amidst my own share of falls & crashes ... I've discovered -- & have continued to learn & experience -- how this 'balancing act' plays out ... and takes a person farther ... in-through-out life. And for me & others, the 'music connection' has also made 'what's positive yet invisible in life' to become possible, practical & real. By actually 'doing this', we have continued to unveil 'IT' as easily doable.
'Setting a comfortable context & pace' is the critical supporting foundation to explore, learn & do more in life ... beyond riding a bike or playing music ... to lead & support one's life as well. Additional support & simple connected steps then can & do emerge. If you're in doubt about this, sit patiently by a nearby stream for awhile ... until you notice how the flow simply seems to continually 'happen'. 'Nature' provides the natural context -- the setting -- for the flow ... to get established & settled ... & progress & continue on ... with resources & actions ... flowing together ... at a comfortable, rythmic pace.
Chances are good that this simple experience has & will prompt you to notice more 'life' happening around you as well. Outside weather conditions & more can change this with time, yet natural existing pathways remain in place even when resource & flow levels change. The is true for us in life as well.
Fortunately for all (& despite the current & growing contrary evidence in our world), life itself still does provide a supportive 'harmony in motion' context -- with clear, connected pathways -- for each & all of us to live, flow & grow ... with the ongoing (yet often-unrealized) potential to fully & supportively voice one's spirit in life as we 'GO LIVE IT'.
We all learn from examples in life. And positive ones can carry us to more that is good. Your own experience literally forms 'your life flow'. Explore life ... continue on, for 'goodness' sake.
Enjoy this 'journey called life'. IT really is like riding a bike. Keep your balance ... & simply expand your world of experience. Rediscover how distant dreams & remote possibilities can become real experiences for you in life as 'well'.
When resources & actions are life-anchored & life-connected, steps become ladders ... & barriers form inviting bridges to supportive, evolving life pathways.
Comfortably lead & support your life ... Enjoy the journey ...
You really can learn & do this (It's like riding a bike). Above all, I wish you 'WELL'.

Ever get a recurrent, supportive song (or thought or idea) in your head? Getting it out can help to mobilize you to more that's positive.
Positively express your voice (& thoughts & ideas) with clear actions. Hum, sing, play an instrument, or 'be instrumental' in other ways. GO on ... Find & do some action or 'task' that feels inviting to you. Casually explore ... & produce something positive for yourself. This may lead to more that's good (& that's especially important during difficult times).
I literally did this today for myself -- with a song that emerged in my head. And I'd like to share this with you: First I began to 'hear it' and recognize it; then I found myself kind of humming along. Somehow I decided to try to play it on my harmonica. I did so for the first time, and I recorded it & have included the brief, unedited audio clip for you below. Then I somehow felt prompted to look for the original, fluid, supportive inspiring-to-me version, by the original artists. I found, watched & listened to that; and I've included the link for you below as WELL.
Feels so uplifting to me ...
Find & add what fits for you as WELL. Love to LIVE. Do something positive for yourself today. Be 'instrumental'; add to the quality of your time & your life. GO LIVE IT!

Feeling stuck these days? Getting nowhere?
You are not alone. Times are tough.
Wondering what you can positively do? Invest in yourself; Go WELL Beyond the Barriers.
Still willing to explore & learn? Rest assured. It's your journey. Continue on . . .
Beyond a false 'quick fix', here's what you can truly & positively do:
Comfortably lead & support your life. Try WELL Power. Blend passion & patience. Invest in your journey.
I wrote the poem below 15 years before I published GO WELL Beyond the Barriers (and also included this in Chapter 1). At the time I wrote this, I had no idea this would lead to a 9 year journey that resulted in completion of the book -- and would also propel me 'WELL' beyond that during the next 18 years.
Notice how the sense of 'awkward fit' that emerges in this -- the realization that, even as changes we desire seem to be delayed -- during these continued difficult economic times -- the harmony of the seasons, our best outside example of harmony in motion, continues in nature as our ongoing life-sustaining backdrop -- hinting that something more is available for us.
If the sentiments in these words below at all connect with you at this time, consider investing in yourself now on this journey called life. Take steps to comfortably lead and support your life as 'well'.
Enjoy the journey ...

I emailed the following to President Obama on 1/11/11:
I'm an Arizona-residing professional (see link below), dual brain surgery survivor with a passion and skills for helping others to comfortably lead their lives in connected elemental ways.
I wrote the document below today in response to the Tucson shootings; and will share this with Behavioral Health Therapist colleagues at a meeting in the morning.
With all the reactions flowing at present, perhaps some of the points I've made in this attachment might be of use or value to you now as well.
This recent tragedy may ironically position our citizens to embrace a collective passion with matching actions -- to more fully embrace life & also others -- and assist others who are less committed to this, to do so as well. This is critical now, as you well know.
Perhaps this is the opportunity to positively leverage the human spirit that you've been seeking. It appears we must & can transition now ...... from reactive, illness-anchored solutions to a collective, proactive, wellness-targeted response.
(What I'm offering is also consistent with the integrated health care delivery model.)
Feel free to use what fits for you.
(My recent 'Live Well ...' video -- via the link below -- may also be of interest or personal support for you now as well.)
I hope you receive this -- and discover something you can use -- for yourself, others, or all.
Thank you for your example,
Leadership Consultant / Wellness Therapist
Well Beyond The Tucson Shootings:
Addressing the ‘Danger To Others’ Risk:
Wellness-Targeted Care -- Thoughts for Colleagues & Others
From Jay Schimke
1) The recent shootings in Tucson have prompted increased safety concerns among our top elected officials; and this is being amplified by the media.
2) This adds to the already-growing personal safety concern among the general population, and among our clients as well (prompted by a continuing adverse & uncertain economic climate).
3) We can help to reduce unrest and promote safety by attending to this with wellness-targeted compassionate care. My initial suggestions are offered below, following related critical information. I’m also open to more & other ideas.
Emerging Social Scenario –
Although it appears likely that the Tucson attack may again eventually be at least partially dismissed as ‘another isolated incident by a deranged person’, the fact that this has touched the ‘working family’ of our national political leaders means that their own sense of personal safety has likely been shaken. Thus, more momentum will likely exist to strengthen the perception that beyond isolated incidents, ‘growing divisiveness and alienation’ seems to be prompting aggressive, life-endangering and life-ending actions that hint of possible trends that may dangerously test our overall social fabric as well.
What Can Be Done --
All is certainly not lost; yet responding with denial or panic are now ineffective action choices. There are distinct actions we can take to 1) reduce escalation of perceived and real danger, 2) build a shared ‘spirit of life-preserving cooperation’ (or tolerance), and 3) promote mutual personal safety and social comfort.
A brief review of ‘the risk of doing nothing’ may help to a) prompt and b) direct our actions: Left unchecked, the perception of reduced personal safety naturally leads to the growth of fear and an accompanying sense of insecurity. Increased insecurity provides a natural context for growing paranoia …
The combination of fear & paranoia can leave individuals and groups more inclined to seek to 1) protect themselves, 2) isolate from others, and/or 3) display defensive or aggressive actions.
‘Danger to Others’ – Indicators --
While no foolproof means exist to identify and prevent defensive and aggressive life-endangering actions by others, certain distinct indicators do exist that point to increased risk for such undesired action. Knowing of these indicators positions us to better address the conditions from which ‘Danger to Others’ actions emerge. These indicators include:
Threats (verbal, written, or behavioral)
Weapons Addition and/or Preparation for Use (when accompanied with expressions of likely intent for illegal use against others)
Escalating hostility (verbal, written, or behavioral)
Existing Options to Address ‘Danger to Others’ Actions –
Legal options exist and have been attempted to a) control individual access to resources, b) limit the ability to take life-threatening action, and c) punish those who attempt or succeed at harming or taking the lives of others. More focus on these choices will likely continue.
Beyond Treating ‘Illness’ After Incidents Occur:
The Therapeutic Approach to Reduce the ‘Danger to Others’ Risk (Proactive, Compassionate, Life-Advocating, ‘Wellness’ Alternatives) –
Pure & simple: More controls and extra punishment will not cure an escalating illness. Those who are attempting life-ending actions are often doing so because they have arrived at a point where this actually seems to them to be their best available option at the time. The undesired consequences of their actions extend beyond their lives, to the lives of others. Prior preventative steps are life-critical.
We’re finally realizing that labeling any and all such persons as ‘mentally ill’ seems to be doing little to cure the growing ‘illness’. And divisiveness, polarization, and economic stress have positioned many otherwise ‘normal’ people near their wits end … to much closer to ‘losing it’. Waiting for them to ‘do something crazy’, and then brand them as ‘crazy people’ clearly is no solution.
Since this ‘illness’ often becomes known only after precious lives have ended, simply ‘treating the illness’ will never end this problem. The time and the opportunity to do more has finally become clear: To reduce future loss of life, we must effectively target, produce, and maintain something larger than ‘illness’.
Our individual & collective ‘wellness’ is what’s at risk now.
Just as we are coming to realize that, without our care & attention, our planet may not always continue to support life as a whole, we’re beginning to realize that, without care & attention, our residents may not always continue to support life as well. ‘Wellness’ must be our #1 priority now … as this is most critical to our survival … for us individually and as a whole.
‘Producing & maintaining wellness’ must become practical, actionable, real & effective. An evolving discipline, the good news about ‘producing & maintaining wellness’ is 1) we’re in this together, 2) we’re all amateurs at this, 3) all can participate, and 4) we have the opportunity to jointly & mutually add satisfying life-supportive and life-promoting results – for ourselves, individually & collectively.
Fortunately, we can do this. The people we need to do this already exist.
Overall, beyond our diversity & differences, for ‘wellness’ to happen,
we must serve as ‘advocates for life’.
Pure & simple, this means to individually & collectively take action
to support the life of our citizens & residents …
Our Primary Challenge is to:
1) Include others in establishing and nurturing a joint commitment and matching actions to support human life;
and, beyond this … to
2) Respect and honor individual choice within limits of existing law.
Initial Ideas to Make This Happen:
What Therapists & Care Providers Can Do –
* Adopt & use interactive ‘wellness-targeted actions’ to a) engage clients and b) regularly assess & verify client’s life-supporting intentions.
* Provide ongoing therapeutic support to clients who are struggling to build or maintain life-supportive actions (see list of ‘Danger to Others’ Indicators).
* Refer as appropriate when a) additional support is needed, or b) duty to warn is indicated.
What We All Can Do –
* Provide support to people who are struggling to build or maintain life-supportive actions.
* Pay special attention to those displaying several ‘Danger to Others’ Indicators; and refer them to others who can assist & provide help, when and as needed.
